Workshop Description:
The Visual Phonics training explores the multi-sensory Visual Phonics system and its benefits in reinforcing beginning literacy skills and speech production for students who are deaf or hard of hearing, bilingual, or possess diverse learning needs. This training develops the skills necessary to implement Visual Phonics in therapeutic and instructional settings. Participants will learn to recognize, produce, and blend the Visual Phonics hand cues and written symbols for the 42+ English phonemes. This training aligns with the Science of Reading as it explores research-based strategies to support beginning reading and spelling instruction with the support of Visual Phonics in therapeutic and instructional settings.

Accommodations: Automatic captioning via zoom is available throughout the training and all videos contain open captions. If you would like to request an interpreter, please contact me at least two weeks in advance of the first date of class. Requests made within 14 calendar days of the first day of class can not be guaranteed.

Participants will:
- explore the rationale behind Visual Phonics (See the Sound) and the impact it has on diverse learners.
- establish a working knowledge of the Visual Phonics hand shapes and printed symbols.
- identify strategies and uses of Visual Phonics to reinforce beginning literacy skills and speech production.
At the end of the training, participants will have the knowledge and materials they need to implement what they have learned during the workshop, including:
- a copy of the Visual Phonics Cards-Digital Download and VP International Font-Digital Download for all attendees who attend and participate in all workshop sessions;
- information for purchasing additional materials from ICLI;
- directions for how to access free and research-based activities that support foundational literacy skills; and,
- access to free refresher sessions, typically 20-45 minutes in length, depending on learner needs.
Please Note:
- The training will not be recorded and are only available at the scheduled dates and times. Participants must attend all days to receive credit; partial credit will not be given.
- This virtual class is conducted via Zoom. Each participant will need an internet accessible, and audio and video -enabled device (such as a laptop computer, iPad or phone).
- This is a live, interactive training. The video will need to be turned on to participate. This will allow me to check participants’ production of the Visual Phonics handshapes and make sure participants’ productions are accurate. Participants will not receive credit for the class if their video is off.
