Assessing Phonological Awareness
Phonological Awareness Skills Screener (PASS)
This assessment tool was originally developed by N. Mather in collaboration with B. Podhajski, D. Rhein, and N. Babur. The first version was entitled the Screening of Early Reading Processes and was published in Mather and Goldstein (2001). The phonological segmentation tasks were adapted from Sawyer’s (1987) Test of Awareness of Language Segments. The most recent edition, the PASS, was revised by N. Mather, J. Sammons, B. Podhajski, J. Kroese, and M. Varricchio.

Sentence Segmentation Tasks
The assessment tools above do not include Sentence Segmentation tasks. Here are a variety of resources and ideas to assess this informally:
- Ask students to repeat three, four, five and six word sentences using this free resource from Speech Therapy Toolbox on TPT.
- Use these free Following Directions from Panda Speech on TPT - ask students to repeat the direction and then do.
- Use a text that contains words that are familiar to the student. Read a sentence to the student and ask the student to repeat. Make note of the sentence length and document student response.
